This piece is inspired by the spirit of solidarity and community-led efforts that have been, and will continue to be, integral in the fight for a more just and equitable world. With each new crisis we face, the economic and environmental inequalities inherent in our relationship with the world are widened and laid bare. While the wealthiest 10 percent of the world is responsible for half of global emissions, the poorest half contributes just 10 percent of the global carbon footprint. As our shared environmental resources are devastated and exploited by the profit-driven choices of the wealthy few, so too are the communities of people who sustain and protect them. Environmental policy must expand to address more than just clean energy, carbon offsetting, conservation, and protection. We need widespread investment in public infrastructure coupled with social initiatives like carbon free public housing, environmental education and a jobs guarantee to ensure these changes happen quickly and provide long-lasting benefits to all members of society and the natural environment. A better world is possible, and I?m hopeful that the Green New Deal will be an important first step to making it a reality. - Kate Leib
