Eric Poland

Eric Poland is a Birmingham contemporary abstract illustrator with a focus on local architecture and nature. His artistic inspiration began as a child that he enjoyed drawing still life and landscapes. Now his primary inspiration comes from the buildings of the newly awakening city of Birmingham. His art is characterized by vivid colors, contrasting lines, and the abstraction of reality. Born and raised most of his youth life in Germany due to his Dad being in the military, created a life of ever adapting to new environments. Sometimes he found himself having a connection with buildings and places instead of people, due to moving so frequently. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Montevallo in 2006. His senior art show concentrated more on editorial illustration, which used a combination of both hand drawn and computer illustration. This style is indicative of what he is creating now. Fast forward, he now has been given the opportunity to be a full time stay at home dad and devotes his free time to creating his illustrations.

Artist Statement

My work focuses on architecture, its role in nature, and man’s struggle for a perfect world. I start with a hand drawing, then I use illustration software to create my renderings; I then juxtapose it with a hand colored background. This program uses the same mathematical tools found in architectural software. Motivation comes from an inner desire to create my “perfect” world, full of vibrant colors and solid structure. — Eric Poland
