Artist Statement

I used Sir Thomas Lawrence's painting of actress Elizabeth Farren (c. 1790). I was drawn to the melancholy clouds, but the way the trees part, bringing the viewer into the calm valley below also reminded me of the dichotomies of Bleak House. Although I cropped the painting, even in the original the subject is off to the right, leading us into the painting. — Marie Mundaca
