Artist Statement

The jumping off point for this moment was straightforward: Magic Johnson’s initial announcement had been recorded and was available for me to watch. It was emotional. I went with almost a straight portrait from that day, with a nod to the Lakers colors. For me, this moment was about awareness. In the case of the HIV virus, which is a continuing global concern, awareness and access to a means of protection are vital. When prominent figures step forward and talk honestly about his or her circumstances, I think that people tend to sit up and take notice. I hope that through Magic Johnson’s actions that day, and the efforts of him and numerous other organizations and individuals since then, more and more people are able to remain safe and healthy. — Alyssa Winans
