Artist Statement

"Libraries are of course full of books, but these days, the technology housed within them is equally important to the many people who use them. We can all check out e-books, utilize services and borrow equipment that we don’t have access to at home. As a starting point, I thought about all these technological offerings and the corresponding icons by which they are signposted. Then, I digitally-traced paper-cut versions (hi-tech rendition of a low-tech technique) of these shapes and icons and placed them within an archetypal building shape. This relationship between high and low tech is further referenced by the use of the font ‘American Typewriter’. Today’s libraries exemplify the way in which the successful employment of technology strengthens, rather than replaces, traditional modes of culture, interaction, and learning. Long live libraries!" - Shan James

About Vote Libraries

Vote Libraries is a collection of designs depicting the changing way that libraries serve communities and the importance of supporting them with your vote. Since the beginning of our country, libraries are an integral part in the life of towns and cities. Proceeds support EveryLibrary, the first and only national organization dedicated exclusively to political action at a local level to create, renew, and protect public funding for libraries of all types.

About our Prints

Each poster is hand-printed and handled, to make sure that only the highest quality is offered and sent out. The matte paper and high quality of inks make for a vibrant image which looks great both framed, and au-naturel. Printed in Los Angeles, CA, on Epson Enhanced Matte Paper, heavyweight stock, high color gamut, using Epson UltraChrome HDR ink-jet technology. Framed posters offer the same, museum-quality printed poster, but wrapped in a protective black frame. The frame is lightweight and includes a shatter-resistant acrylite front protector, so it won't break in the mail. International orders may be subject to customs duties & taxes.
