Artist Statement

When I first began looking into the issue of "guns" after recent events of the news, it quickly became apparent that it's an exceedingly complicated issue. I found it difficult to decide what to focus on. It seems like no "best" solution exists as long as troubled and desperate people feel like violence is their only choice. My illustration concentrates on the height of optimism and (some would say) naivete, but a world with less senseless violence is one I would like to see. I hope to send off more than just the physical manifestation of the problem, but also the deep underlying feelings that cause people to misuse their resources. I worked out my basic idea and composition in pencil thumbnails, and took it to digital for the finish. — Alyssa Winans
