Artist Statement

For this campaign I wanted to do a recovery of the classical illustrations by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland! As someone who always loved this story growing up I really wanted to give it a try in my own style. I love the original whimsical drawings by LC, but wanted to put a more colorful spin on them. I first sketched it out roughly on paper then did a more finer sketch in color in photoshop. I watched many time-themed movies to try to give Alice’s dress more of a 1860′s decorative look in color. I of course also watched all the Alice in Wonderland movie versions, from the first one caught on film, to the newest CGI versions of Through the Looking Glass. For the White Rabbit, he is described to be a “fancy rabbit”...so I wanted to dress him up as so. I also took some inspiration from my lionhead bunny Strudel for the shape of the face and big eyelashes since she’s pretty fancy herself. I ended up doing a double page spread along with my take on the book cover. I hand-lettered “Who Are You?” in the smoke of Absolem the caterpillar as Alice falls down the rabbit hole since I believe that’s what the whole story is about, Alice finding herself and becoming more confident in who's she is and not what others wish her to be. I wanted to capture the Cheshire Cat in both the cover and the double page spread since I always thought he was what “made” Wonderland for me, both in his philosophy and his whimsical, playful, and dare I say mad ways....but then again ”all the best people are”. I hope you all enjoy my interpretation! - Tina Schofield
