Artist Statement

A decade before the Civil War, Northup, a free African American, living upstate New York was approached by two circus promoters who offered him a job with their circus. He was drugged, and sold as a slave for 12 years, eventually being freed by people from his hometown of Saratoga, New York. Northup's book about his life and journey as a slave, sold 30,000 copies, a bestseller. His story became an Oscar-winning 2013 film 12 Years a Slave. (3rd design) - BOB RUBIN
