Well. I'm proud to say I was an art and design major at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I spent awhile figuring things out after graduating. I'm now a freelance graphic designer and an in-house illustrator for the stationery and gifts company Smudge Ink (smudgeink.com). I enjoy cooking, climbing, running, hiking, reading, dancing, beer, art of all sorts, and music. That's about it.

Artist Statement

So much was going on in India during the time this book was written. Colonialism was in full force in India by the British, and cultural worlds were colliding. The Jungle Book was also written by Kipling with the intention of it being read as a children's book. All of these factors were taken into account when designing the cover. The British Imperialism aspect represents itself in the militaristic/industrial typography while the playful woodcut animal illustrations represent the imaginative aspect of a children's book as well as the traditional craft of Indian woodcut printmaking. Two colors were further used to really hit home the idea of the colliding of these two cultural worlds. — Clayton Beltran
