Artist Statement

"I used Sir Thomas Lawrence's painting of actress Elizabeth Farren (c. 1790). I was drawn to the melancholy clouds, but the way the trees part, bringing the viewer into the calm valley below also reminded me of the dichotomies of Bleak House. Although I cropped the painting, even in the original the subject is off to the right, leading us into the painting." - Marie Mundaca

Marie Mundaca is book designer who lives in New York City. She has designed interiors for books by James Patterson and David Foster Wallace.
