Artist Statement

"The abstract image used for this cover expresses the theme of the novel: the artist is questioning and rebelling against his upbringing. The artist is evolving. He is not yet fully formed." - Ethel Jimenez

Ethel Jimenez www.etheljimenez.com A native New Yorker, I was seduced by San Francisco and moved west several years ago. Reflected in my photography is an interest in the urban landscape and abstract themes. An early love of photography was encouraged by my father's gift of a 35mm camera. Soon friends and family were requesting copies of my work. Today my work is sold through galleries and has been auctioned for the benefit of the Mexican Museum, Visual Aid, ArtSpan, and other non-profit organizations. I agree with Paul Strand who said "An artist's world is limitless. It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away. It is always on his doorstep." It is not necessary to travel far to find interesting subjects. I enjoy shooting endearingly shabby and decrepit buildings that are full of history, as well as, simple scenes that can be transformed into abstract compositions by focusing on color, texture, and shape to draw the viewer in. I look for the beauty that surrounds us in everyday places and objects.
