Artist Statement

I am an immigrant. When I came to the United States as a graduate student, I was terribly homesick. What got me through those initial years were the people of this country who offered warmth and friendship to so many of us who had left our homes behind. So you can imagine my horror when decades later I was confronted with a vitriolically divisive rhetoric. How could this voice be so much in dissonance with what I had experienced thus far? As my husband, little daughter and I took our very first steps in our very first march in this country, I saw that I was surrounded by an ocean of diverse ethnicities, religious beliefs, sexual orientations, genders and abilities who were bound together by one common belief - that every human is free and equal in dignity and rights. At that moment, I felt deep pride and gratitude and realized that this immigrant family wholly belonged amidst the United Faces of America who come together again and again to make this country truly great. — Aditi Raychoudhury
