My name is Lauren van Reken. I am an Illustrator living in Chicago focused on representational and editorial illustration. I work traditionally, beginning with ink and nib and digitally coloring the image to get the desired color effect I want. I focus on nature in my work because I like to illustrate the beauty that the world possesses as well as show others the fascinating environments they can uncover if they simply explore. fireflyillustration.com

Artist Statement

I chose to illustrate Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park because, growing up in Las Vegas, I visited the barren desert often. Badwater Basin always fascinated me because of the clay and salt formations that are created due to the harsh conditions and low elevation. I illustrated Death Valley National Park from my point of view and the way its beauty should be portrayed. ‰ÛÓ Lauren van Reken
