I created a Drop Cap for my book cover because I think the concept of a Drop Cap is especially suited for the classics that only need one letter as a standalone. The literature speaks for itself and anything more would distract from the masterpiece. My forms and color palette reflect the story in its almost grotesque perfection. The blackened red metal creates an abstracted skull and the letterform of the "I" is meant to visually portray the journey from Hell all the way to paradise with a star detailing in the center. At the conclusion of every book in the divine comedy there is a sentence tying all stories together with the mentioning of stars. Visually, the slopes in the "I" letterform that compose the star are meant to embody the shapes of each dimension of Hell into Purgatory and then to Paradise. I chose to digitally vector and reflect the calligraphic image and then paint on top of it in photoshop to bevel the edge. This was meant to add a ridged and dangerous appearance resembling the black metal bars making of the gates of Hell. The blue color variation found in the actual "I" of the Drop Cap is meant to represent the Deepest pit of Hell where it is frozen solid. — Colt Barron
