Nick Nortier is an illustrator, mural painter, and printmaker, but also enjoys woodworking, performing spoken word poetry, and the overall process of making creative work. Growing up, his main interests were skating and drawing, two hobbies which would eventually merge into one. From skating, he learned to look at the environment in new and creative ways, which would end up influencing how his work interacts with the area that it’s placed in. He believes the role of street art and murals is to be an art form that is accessible to everyone.

Artist Statement

The term "Migration is not a crime" was stuck in my head after ICE protests during the past few years. I thought about it in the context of bird migration and how they are free to migrate as they please but when it comes to people, movements across borders can be a criminal offense. There's a classic skateboard graphic that reads "Skateboarding is not a crime", so I merged the two ideas to come up with this design. I believe that we need to treat people with respect and dignity and do whatever we can to help those who are trying to find a better life by moving to the United States and that no person is illegal. "Like birds, humans are migratory creatures. Our migrations may not always feel as literal as the migration patterns of a bird, moving north in the spring to nest and flourish and south in the winter to guarantee food and sun; but they are equally necessary. Sometimes we migrate like birds, following the warm weather and twelve hour days. Other times we migrate within, shifting to people or places or thoughts within our own habitats that help us feel most at home. And like birds, sometimes we are forced to flee. Our homes can become unsafe and refuge must be sought elsewhere. We all deserve a safe place so when you see another in distress, migrating for the sake of safety or community or refuge, welcome them home.
