Artist Statement

The marshes and bayous of south Louisiana are the living protectors of the deep south! The wetlands are home to many different species. One of the best ways to explore the watery landscape is a languid float in a small canoe called a pirogue. Loud, nimble airboats carrying thrill seeking visitors will blow by cypress trees decorated with Spanish moss. Many birds make their home here including the state bird, the pelican, a favorite among locals and tourists alike! Down below, lazy gators sun themselves on the water banks in between meals. In addition to being a thriving habitat, the wetlands are also a natural barrier against damaging hurricane tidal surges and violent winds. Slowly sinking into the Gulf of Mexico due to rising waters and erosion, this habitat is beautiful, but fragile! See the "Wetlands of Louisiana" and help preserve them before its too late! ‰ÛÓ Laura Montgomery
