Artist Statement

Using the softwares, Procreate, Painting Tool SAI, and Adobe Photoshop, I was able to use gradients and symmetrical as well as asymmetrical line work to create my version of Jules Verne's '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' book cover. This was made for a class to practice our skills as illustrators specifically in designing book covers. The cover itself was easy to visualize, but the real challenge was incorporating a bold title. It took a lot of tracing over various texts and font styles until I found one to fit. The reason why I chose Jules Verne's story is because of my own love for the ocean and it's dangerous wonders. It's a part of our world we need to start driving our fascination to. If we can influence current readers to become interested in the oceans it'll lead to a future focused more on our environment. - Laiqah Hanold
