Artist Statement

I looked at many incredible photos of immigrants in the early 1900's. How amazing and emotional it must have been to finally reach New York and see the Statue of Liberty welcoming you. Seeing all of these beautiful, brave families who fled all kinds of horrible situations to come to America... it got me to thinking of my grandfather arriving with his family to Ellis Island from Galicia. As I painted in watercolor, I thought of these families and of people today seeking a new life here. — Elizabeth Kennen
