Artist Statement

The Red Umbrella idea came to me as I reflected on my oldest child starting school, and my primary concern was: would my child be safe? This image of violence "raining down" on our children was stuck in my head, so I had to put it to paper. The weapons illustrated here may look familiar because they were drawn to resemble ones used in the Columbine, Sandy Hook and Parkland massacres. I don't believe we have to accept violence and bloodshed as our new normal. Each of us can do our part to advocate for safer schools. - Julie Santelices
