Artist Statement

As a 9th generation Californian, I basically grew up at the beach in San Diego and I have lifeguards to thank for my continued safety. The noble lifeguard is severely under-compensated for the amazing feats of courage and selflessness they perform daily. In spite of their tremendous bravery and their willingness to sacrifice everything for the safety of strangers, they are among the lowest paid public servants in California. Most lifeguards stay in peak physical condition and are trained in emergency response techniques to facilitate their role, and yet they cannot make a living wage while saving the lives of others. To those who struggle to make ends meet while pulling children out of rip tides and keeping our beaches and pools safe, thank you for your service! — David Hays
