Recovering The Classics is a crowdsourced collection of original book covers for some of the greatest works in the public domain, where anyone can contribute.
When I began the planning phases of this project I pondered how I could create a cover that would be considered fresh and new. As an illustrator my strengths lie in creating work with a graphic novel flavor. I chose to highlight a scene from Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, more specifically the moment that Aladdin first meets the Genie in the magical cave. I wanted my cover to be powerful as well as intimidating thus the reason I chose to keep a monochromatic red color scheme. Furthermore, I decided to keep Aladdin an off white to bring attention to the character as well as giving a sense of purity. This piece was done using pencils and inks followed by taking the image to Photoshop and digitally coloring it there. — Gustavo Barbosa
