When I was given the opportunity to design a cover for âRecovering the Classicsâ , I had already been working on a series of fairy tale illustrations for a book of my own re-visioned fairy tales, so âGrimmsâ Fairy Talesâ was a natural choice. Hans, the spunky Hedgehog Boy, reviled by the father who wanted a son âeven if he be a hedgehog,â but determined to survive, had also become one of my favorite offbeat characters. âHans the Hedgehogâ is one of the lesser known Grimm tales, and I wanted others to make his acquaintance as well. Heâs small but prickly and astute, and he prevails.
