The Fort Monroe National Monument, also know as "Freedom's Fortress" was a Union Army, Civil War era fortification in Hampton, Virginia at Old Point Comfort on the southern tip of the Virginia Peninsula. The fort guarded the navigation channel between the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads at the confluence of the Elizabeth River, the Nansemond River and the James River. The 7 sided star fort is surrounded by a moat. It s the largest stone fort ever built in the United States. - Don Henderson
