Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument was established by presidential decree on September 18, 1996 across 1,880,461-acres in southern Utah that are federally owned. In 2017, the Secretary of the Interior recommended it be reduced in size by 47%, which is pending legal action. Politics aside, the monument offers great recreational opportunities for hiking, hunting, mountain biking, and backpacking. The painting depicts a natural bridge in Coyote Gulch, accessed by trail from the gravel Hole-in-the-Rock Road, which is maintained by the Bureau of Land Management (and not protected within the new boundaries). ‰ÛÓ Bruce and Scott Sink
