Started in 2008 and revived in 2012, Design For Obama is a grassroots collection of posters from artists around the country that helped elect Barack Obama as President. Select designs from the 2008 collection were published as a coffee table book with filmmaker and activist Spike Lee and design author and historian Steven Heller.

I am a graphic designer in NYC. I have run my own business, Sheryl Checkman Design LLC since 1993. I have designed and managed projects of all sizes and scope, from concept through production, for a variety of organizations. Her expertise includes providing creative solutions for both print and digital initiatives, including branding and corporate identity, website design, banner ads and email newsletters, brochures, annual reports, press kits, posters, invitations, sales kits, trade show exhibits, manuals, flyers and ads. In addition to supplying creative solutions to client problems I also have developed a branded line of inspirational, sport-themed t-shirts called Life is Balance® that celebrate the balance that sports and activities bring to life. I am an avid scuba diver, skier and practice yoga regularly. I try to express my personal creativity through photography (both landscape and underwater) resulting in Digital Fine Art works which have become inspiration for a variety of retail offerings including home decor, wearables, greeting cards and wall art. Prior to establishing my business, I was VP & Manager, Design Services for Burson-Marsteller. I graduated with a BA from Cornell University and attended a three month design program at the University of Copenhagen followed by a Masters program in Communications Design at Pratt Institute. I graduated from the High School of Music & Art (currently called LaGuardia High School) in NYC.

Artist Statement

During the 2008 election, Sarah Palin's practice of hunting her own states declining polar bear population made headlines. Building on this, I choose to focus my campaign for Obama design around the idea that a vote for Obama was a vote for the polar bears. — Sheryl Checkman
