Kathryn Kaiser is a naturally gifted artist and designer who lives in Ontario, Canada. Her art is executed through her studio, Verity Blue Studio. The bulk of her work thus far has been life drawing, landscape and portraiture. She works mainly in charcoal, graphite, oil and acrylic…media that allows her to express her vision relatively intuitively and immediately. The human condition holds the most inspiration for her, and this is where she finds herself returning again and again. Relentless in her search for truth and understanding, it is critical for her to interpret each subject individually. How are we affected by our environment and experiences? Where do we hold our scars, what are our stories and how do we overcome our trials?

This peice was inspired by a very dear Syrian friend of mine, currently in exile in Jordan. Trapped between worlds… husbandless and childless, with hope for the possibility of her own future fading. Her mother is burdened with the knowledge that she can neither control the circumstances under which they live, nor help her children thrive. “Have a Red Blue Day” is an ancient greeting from the plains people, which meant “Have a Sacred Day”. It came from the understanding that all life is sacred. Blue is the colour of sea and sky and symbolizes spirit; Red symbolizes earth and blood. My original intent was not to create a red/blue painting, but as I worked, I realized I was painting a blessing…a prayer for her and the souls of those caught in the turmoil of the wars of men and greed. 16” x 20” Oil on gallery wrapped canvas — Kathryn Kaiser
