Artist Statement

This piece started with a fair bit of research. Through articles and images, I wanted to learn as much as I could about the three athletes I would be portraying. It was very important to me to be as respectful in my idea and rendering as possible. I also looked into LGBT athletes worldwide and their roles throughout history, because to me they have been a key part of everything leading up to the moment we wanted to focus on this time. For me, it was one of the most inspiring reference projects I’ve done. I think it takes a tremendous amount of courage to be upfront with who you are, especially in an environment that has historically not always been the most accepting. I can only hope that people take heart from Brittney, Jason, and Michael’s example, and that of other LGBT role models worldwide. It would be wonderful if people of all ages and backgrounds feel they can be safely open about who they are no matter what they choose to pursue in life. — Alyssa Winans
