Artist Statement

In Obamas second Inaugural speech, he said, “We are true to our creed when a little girl born into the bleakest poverty knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else, because she is an American; she is free, and she is equal, not just in the eyes of God but also in our own.” My own story begins in America where I was born to parents of immigrants in search of opportunity. As an American, I am lucky to have more opportunities than my parents had in their home country. While we still have lots of progress to make towards equal opportunity, we live in a country where we will not settle and we will continually strive to do better for all Americans. This is what makes America great. — Lorraine Nam
