Artist Statement

This poster portrays the St. Croix River's wildlife, geology, and clean waters ‰ÛÒ three elements that make it so special. The cobbled rocks can be found at river beaches out just past the sand and gravel, carried there by glaciers, washed by the current. A sturgeon that looks like a meandering channel rests there ‰ÛÒ a living dinosaur, a hundred years old, the species 200 million. Then there is the shimmering water itself, sometimes muddy, often tinted red, crystal clear on hot August days when boaters floating over shallow water might see a sturgeon below, shadows of the past. Protected as a Wild & Scenic Riverway, managed by the National Park Service, the river keeps getting more precious as the years go by. While the rest of the world ‰ÛÒ and the nearby metropolitan area ‰ÛÒ keeps growing and modernizing, the river remains much as it always has been. Its waters are cool and clean, an abundance of creatures live in and along it, it runs free for the most part. The old-growth forests are gone, but the sturgeon have returned. The river remains relatively pristine because of stewardship of many people and organizations. That's why $2 from each purchase of this poster will be donated to the St. Croix River Association, which works to protect, restore, and celebrate the St. Croix River and its watershed.
